Wadi Gaza Coastal Wetland Conservation and Development

The Wadi Gaza Natural Park and Greenway will, upon its completion, reconnect physically and socially diverse urban environs of five municipalities of the Gaza Strip with the river and the wetland.

Project Summary

This project aims to protect public health of the Gaza Strip and its natural resources through the restoration and rehabilitation of Wadi Gaza as a recognized natural reserve and coastal wetland. The project will also enhance the livelihood of residents of surrounding towns by developing recreational facilities and creating job opportunities through the project activities.

A comprehensive master plan for Wadi Gaza will be developed. The Wadi will be cleaned, rehabilitated, greened, fenced, and protected. The pollution originating from the discharge of wastewater and dumping of solid waste will be controlled and minimized. Access roads along the western part of the Wadi will be rehabilitated and developed and a check dam will be rehabilitated / constructed. In addition, an operational management plan for Wadi Gaza ,as a nature reserve, will be developed; a legal and institutional structure/collation will be proposed and supported to protect and operate the area.

Community awareness regarding biodiversity and protection of natural reserves and wetlands will be enhanced. Domestic tourism and local economic development will be promoted through the establishment of a recreational facility managed by a Public-Private-Partnership model (PPP) to ensure employment and operational sustainability.
