Gaza, 05 June 2017- Commemorating the 2017 World Environment Day, under the theme “Connecting People with Nature”, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People, with the help of volunteers from Al Fakhoora Dynamic Futures Programme, cleaned 15,000 square meters of Gaza’s beach.

World Environment Day is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action and takes place every 5 June. This year’s theme implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share.

According to a recent study by the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority, almost 50% of Gaza beach is polluted and not suitable for swimming. Hence, 30 students from Al Fakhoora Dynamic Futures Programme, in cooperation with Gaza municipality, teamed up to clean the crowded, yet polluted, Gaza beach from the surplus of trash that is left by visitors during the summer season.

The Director of Health and Environment at Gaza Municipality, Mr Abdelrahim Abu Al Qumboz, thanked the students for their efforts and highlighted that Gaza beach is considered one of the main locations people head to during summer. This increases the level of pollution and the municipality is doing its best to keep the beach clean.

The activity is organized as part of the Right to Education Programme implemented by UNDP with funds from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) through Al Fakhoora, a programme of Education above All Foundation. The USD 21 million Programme aims to respond to the current deficit of classrooms and reconstruct and rehabilitate 51 educational facilities damaged and destroyed during the 2014 hostilities on Gaza.
