UNDP Signs Agreements with OFID in Support of East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip Projects

East Jerusalem, 02 April 2014 – Under the auspices of the Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs, the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed agreements worth USD 3.3 million to implement projects in support of the resilience of Palestinians residing in East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.

H.E. Adnan Al Husseini, Minister of Jerusalem Affairs welcomed the OFID delegation to East Jerusalem emphasized the importance of supporting the resilience of the Palestinians living in East Jerusalem in light of the challenges they face on daily basis.

The projects, which will be implemented by UNDP, aim at supporting the housing and health sectors in East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. The grant will contribute to the renovation and expansion of existing maternity wards in two of the four hospitals located in the Gaza Strip, namely Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza city and Al Nasser Complex in Khan Younis.

OFID's Director General, Mr Suleiman Al-Herbish, highlighted "the strategic partnership between OFID and UNDP; an organization able to channel in an effective manner the unwavering support of OFID to the Palestinian People".

As for East Jerusalem, the OFID support will contribute to the establishment of a Neurology Department at the Makassed Hospital, deployment of renewable energy and implementation of energy efficiency interventions and capacity development for hospital professionals at St. Joseph Hospital, in addition to the renovation and rehabilitation of 200 housing units in East Jerusalem. The projects are expected to generate over 2000 workdays and benefit over 350,000 people from the local community in East Jerusalem and thousands of referrals from the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

OFID and UNDP have a longstanding partnership that began in 1979. Over the years, the cooperation extended to 22 projects worth over USD 36 million.

Thanking Mr Al-Herbish for OFID’s support, Mr Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator highlighted that that UNDP and OFID have a longstanding partnership with the Palestinian people that started over 34 years ago. "UNDP, as the development arm of the UN, continues to strengthen the resilience of the Palestinian people by prioritizing its development investments where the needs are the most – East Jerusalem, Area C and Gaza. The agreements we are signing today are one of the available instruments used to support the resilience and steadfastness of the Palestinian people and improve their livelihoods”, he added.

The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday 02 April 2014 in the presence of H.E. Adnan Al Husseini, Minister of Jerusalem Affairs; Mr Suleiman Al-Herbish, Director General of OFID, Dr Rafiq Al Husseini, CEO of Al Maqassed Hospital, Dr Maher Deeb, Medical Director at St. Joseph Hospital and Mr Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator.

It is worth noting that UNDP is implementing several socio-economic programmes in Area East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, in particular through the Facilitating Access to Infrastructure Resilience in Area C and East Jerusalem programme (FAIR) and the Deprived Families Economic Empowerment Programme (DEEP).
