    New UNDP Special Representative arrives at the occupied Palestinian territory

    UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark, appointed Mr Roberto Valent as her Special Representative to UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (PAPP), to replace Mr Frode Mauring, who served as Special Representative from February 2011 to May 2015. Mr Valent assumed his responsibilities on Wednesday 27 May 2015. Prior to this appointment, Mr Valent was the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in El Salvador and Belize.

    State Secretary of Sweden Visits UNDP Projects and Signs Agreement in Support of Area C and East Jerusalem

    In the presence of State Secretary of Sweden, Ulrika Modéer, the Consul General of Sweden, Ann-Sofie Nilsson, and UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator, Frode Mauring, signed a USD 3.6 million agreement (SEK 30 million) to support the resilience of Palestinians residing in Area C and East Jerusalem.

    UNDP Removes Quarter Million Tons of Rubble in Gaza

    A quarter of a million tons of rubble have been removed by UNDP’s Rubble and Debris Removal project in the Gaza Strip has removed since the beginning of 2015, generating over 9,669 workdays. Rubble was removed from 270 locations and buildings enabling the reconstruction to begin in different areas of Shujayia, Gaza City, Middle Area, Rafah and Khan Younis.

    UNDP Launches Palestinian Human Development Report - Development for Empowerment

    Palestinian human development is heavily impeded by the occupation and factors that adversely influence human security, as well as economic, social and environmental predictability, according to the latest Palestinian Human Development Report, released today by Lead Author Dr Salam Fayyad and UNDP’s Special Representative of the Administrator, Frode Mauring. The Palestinian Human Development Report “Development for Empowerment” examines the status of human development in the State of Palestine by highlighting key trends in demography, economy and employment, poverty, education and health.

    Al Fakhoora, UNDP and UNICEF Agree on the Implementation of Education, Reconstruction and Psychosocial Support Projects in Gaza

    Education Above All’s Al Fakhoora programme, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have agreed on the implementation of joint education, reconstruction and psychosocial support projects in Gaza, with a focus on damages occurred in Gaza during last summer’s hostilities. UNDP and UNICEF have come to Doha to present their work packages to Al Fakhoora, after which the implementation of the projects will take place.

    The Hashemite Fund for the Restoration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and UNDP sign a USD 22 million project to rehabilitate Sultan Suleiman and Salah Eddin streets in Jerusalem

    Under the Auspices and attendance of His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi Bin Muhammad, Chairman of the Hashemite Fund for the Restoration of Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed a cooperation agreement with the Hashemite Fund and the Administration of Jerusalem’s Awqaf to facilitate the implementation of rehabilitation works of Waqf buildings and stores at Sultan Suleiman and Salah Eddin streets in Jerusalem.the project will support the resilience of Palestinians residing in East Jerusalem by improving socio-economic conditions through the urban revitalization of two key commercial centres in the city.

    USD 9.4 million Emergency Funding from Japan to support projects in the West Bank and Gaza through UNDP

    As part of their continuous efforts to support the Palestinian people, the Government of Japan announced the approval of a USD 9.4 million grant for projects implemented in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank through UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP). The new contribution from Japan will cover three projects that address environmental sustainability and employment generation.

    USD 3 million Contribution from the Government of Norway through UNDP to Support Gaza

    The Government of Norway and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed a USD 3 million (NOK 23,000,000) agreement to fund shelter assistance packages for non-refugees as part of their on-going support to early recovery efforts in the Gaza Strip.

    During a press conference which took place on 15 February 2015 at Al Shaqab in Doha, Education Above All’s Al Fakhoora programme signed agreements worth USD 40 million with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) for reconstruction, rehabilitation and psychosocial support projects in the education sector, with a focus on damages occurred in Gaza during last summer’s hostilities.

    Under the Auspices of H.E Prime Minister Al Hamdallah Cornerstone Laying for Khan Younis Waste Water Treatment Plant in Gaza

    Today marked an important step forward for the residents of Khan Younis as they celebrated the cornerstone laying for the construction of Khan Younis Waste Water Treatment Plant in Gaza with officials from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, the Government of Japan, Palestinian Water Authority, Coastal Municipalities Water Utility, Khan Younis Municipality and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People. The implementation, construction and co-financing of the USD 58 million Plant will be through UNDP with funds from the Government of Japan and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development through the Islamic Development Bank.

    Japan Provides Emergency Funding for Rubble Removal in Gaza through UNDP

    UNDP has been entrusted with a USD 500,000 contribution from the Government of Japan to remove rubble and debris in the Gaza Strip. With the Government of Japan’s contribution, around 30,000 tonnes of rubble will be removed over the period of 10 months, generating approximately 5,400 workdays.

    UNDP Signs USD 10 Million Agreement with USAID for Rubble Removal in Gaza

    UNDP and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a USD 10 million agreement to remove rubble and debris in the Gaza Strip. The USAID contribution will enable UNDP to clear around 65% (649,177 tonnes) of the rubble generated in hard hit areas in Rafah, Khan Younis, Gaza City and northern governorates. The project will be implemented over a period of one year and will generate approximately 116,852 workdays.

    UNDP and the Ministry of Labour roll out Cash for Work Programme for affected communities in Gaza

    UNDP and the Ministry of Labour signed agreements with seven non-governmental organizations to partner in the cash for work programme following the 2014 Gaza crisis. Cash assistance worth USD 1 million from UNDP’s own resources will be provided to create 1000 employment opportunities in four sectors; agriculture, education, environment and health.

    UNDP signs USD 10 million agreement with Islamic Development Bank for housing in Gaza

    UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Government, represented by the Prime Minister’s office, signed a USD 10 million agreement with the Islamic Development Bank to reconstruct partially damaged housing units in Gaza. Non-refugee families whose homes have been partially damaged during the recent conflict will receive cash assistance to address their accommodation needs.

    UN Secretary General visits UNDP fishermen project in Gaza

    UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited one of the UNDP projects that support Gaza fisheries, where he met with Gaza’s sole registered fisherwoman. The project is strengthening livelihoods through the construction of 24 brick huts for 168 fishermen in Gaza’s port to enable them to secure their fishing equipment.

    UNDP boosts legal aid provision to over 40,000 people in the Gaza Strip

    UNDP will provide legal aid services to over 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza who have suffered as a direct result of the 51-day Israeli Operation in July-August 2014. With a USD 530,000 investment, legal aid services will be provided to people who seek legal redress, including legal information, legal advice and mediation, legal and judicial representation, advocacy and policy analysis.
